On my doorstep
I have been looking forward to writing this post because I love this restaurant. Urban Orient is a Vietnamese restaurant towards the edge of what was once known as the Crystal Palace triangle (some may still call it that but I have not heard it spoken). I have been to Urban Orient somewhere between 6-8 times in the past year. My mum loves it and I recently came here for a birthday meal with friends and they loved it too.
The restaurant itself is very small, but what it lacks in square area it makes up for with it’s charm and delicious food. Asian food definitely has a lot of attraction for me, mainly because of my Filipino background.
The interior is not overdone or glammed up in anyway. It’s wooden tables and chairs emphasise a rustic feel, with dishes and chef specials written in chalk on black boards behind the small counter. The tables and a little close together due to the small space but you never feel on top of someone else.
Now to the crucial, part the food. Here are some dishes available they I have tried:
- Prawn dumpling
- Vegetable dumpling
- Char Siu Bun
- Satay Chicken
Bun (rice vermicelli dish)
- Ha Noi Brilled Fish
- Co’m Xa Xiu – Char Siu with Rice
- Coconut Chicken
The Ha Noi Grilled Fish has become a firm favourite. The fish comes on a separate stand with a candle lit underneath. Your main plate is filled with shredded onion, salad, rice vermicelli, prawn crackers and the Hanoi Special sauce. I mean just look at it….
Whenever I go past the restaurant it is busy and when I am dining I always notice people coming in asking for a table even when it is full. Take away is also available. Urban Orient has definitely become a local paradise of Vietnamese cuisine that is in keeping with the popular area Crystal Palace has become.
