Asian food has always been a huge pull for me. Maybe this is because of my Filipino background or the smell of freshly cooked spring rolls., who knows. So when a friend suggested going to a pan-Asian restaurant I jumped at the opportunity.
Chi Kitchen is not a restaurant you will find all over London. There are actually only two in the UK, one in London and one in Birmingham. They are both located within a Debenhams store, therefore, giving customers an ample opportunity to discover the good energy created by the interior and food. Chi in Chinese means energy.
The Debenhams flagship store in Oxford Street is where Chi Kitchen is, but it’s not immediately obvious to find in such a big store. It is situated at the back corner of the store on the ground floor. There is an entrance to the restaurant from the street which is much more convenient. Pleasant greetings await you as you are ushered to a table. On both occasions when I have dined here I was able to get a table quite easily, even on a Saturday evening.
The food options are wide ranging and I wouldn’t be surprised if it took you awhile to narrow down your choices: Here is a selection from the Mains, available from 11am
- Sharing platters for 2
- Express set menus (for 1 person) – Wonton soup, Dim sum platter with Jasmine green tea
- Soups – chicken and prawn wonton soup
- Dimsum (is there anything else better in the world!) – chicken and prawn Siu Mai dumplings
- Small plates (Robata BBQ) – chicken yakitori
- Large plates – Asian fish and chips
- Soup noodles – Vietnamese beef pho
- Desserts – Mango cheesecake
I feel full now after writing this.
The arrangement of the restaurant I thought was very good. There was a lot of natural light from the windows parallel to the streets, with many seats next to them. The open views of the kitchen allow all the customers to see the food being prepared and smell the wonderful Asian flavours.
The food was delicious and very well portioned I thought. In many restaurants there tends to be a lot more on your plate than is probably necessary, maybe that’s just my lack of appetite. In Chi Kitchen, the portions leave you sufficiently full but not to the extent of feeling like you need to walk it off slowly.
I have tried different dishes on my previous visits and I have been more than satisfied each time. If you are ever shopping in Oxford Street and looking for a nice place for lunch or dinner, head to Chi Kitchen. Most likely you’ll be back there again.
